Why are soy candles the better option? – Let’s explore the benefits

Why are soy candles the better option? Let’s get real for a second, we live in a time where any form of information can be found at our fingertips. However, not all of this easily accessible information is accurate, right? Many articles are just published to keep up with the current trends, so how do we know if soy candles are truly the better option? We explore the pro’s and con’s of Soy candles to help you understand why they are the best option.

With so many options available in-store and online, it’s natural to wonder what’s the best option for you and your family.

Most store bought candles are made from paraffin wax, which are hyper toxic. Paraffin comes from petroleum, so it’s considered a byproduct of crude oil. When a paraffin candle is lit, it creates benzene and toluene which are both very harmful toxins. According to SANS, paraffin wax candles will also poorly affect your indoor air quality, which is not great obviously!
We light a candle to run away from our problems, not create more.

So what’s the safer, more eco-friendly option out there?

Definitely Soy candles and Beeswax Candles. Using candles that were produced  with plant based fragrances or essential oils with wicks made from cotton or paper is another benefit.

Now I’m sure you thought I was only going to mention soy candles, but that would make me biassed. At Hazel and Blue, we value quality, eco-friendly products over mass produced items any day and quite frankly soy candles are not the only safer option out there.
They are however, in our opinion, the best option.

Let’s explore a few benefits of Soy Candles

1. They’re a better option for your health.

Soy wax is a natural, plant-based wax derived from the oil of soybeans. After being harvested, the soybeans are cleaned, de-hulled, and rolled into flakes. The oil is then carefully extracted from the flakes and goes through a process called hydrogenation.

During hydrogenation, some of the unsaturated fatty acids in the oil are transformed into saturated fats. This change gives the oil a higher melting point, allowing it to solidify at room temperature. Soy wax is completely natural and does not create any toxic chemicals once burnt, so it’s definitely a safer option when taking your health into consideration. If you’re concerned about respiratory health, soy candles are the way to go

2. Soy candles offer a longer burn time

They burn at a lower temperature, allowing them to burn longer and give you more bank for your buck.

3. Soy candles are sustainable

During the production of soy wax, nothing goes to waste as the leftover soybean husks are commonly used as nutrient-rich animal feed. We value sustainability at Hazel and Blue, and by making small changes in your purchases, supporting various businesses in the eco-conscious industry, you can also adopt a more sustainable lifestyle and lessen your footprint here on our beautiful planet.

4. Soy candles smell better

They tend to have a more natural and subtle scents, allowing your home to smell wonderful without being overpowering. Thanks to their slower burn, they offer a more gentle and consistent scent in your home, making it a better option for everyday use.

Now that you know more about about some of the benefits of soy candles, let’s be completely transparent about the disadvantage soy candles may have:

Like many natural products, they don’t last as long as the other toxic options you have out there. Soy candles usually have a shelf life of about 1-2 years, but hey, that’s the trade-off for a healthier, happier world! Would you rather live with the knowledge that your candles might expire, or breathe in toxins from mass-produced, petroleum-based products? I’ll say it’s worth a little sacrifice!

Let’s be real—choosing sustainability may come with a few minor inconveniences, but when it’s a choice between a short-lived candle or a long-lived you, we’re sticking with our eco-friendly soy wax. It’s a small price to pay for clean air and a future we can all enjoy!
